APL ration cardholders face higher prices

In Himachal Pradesh’s Public Distribution System, the rates for two essential commodities have been lifted for families with Above Poverty Line (APL) cards. The price of sugar has been increased to ₹52 per kilogram, up from ₹48. Likewise, the cost of urad dal has risen to ₹117 per kilogram, a jump from ₹112.

Depot shortages compound the issue

At the same time, several PDS warehouses report stock gaps. In a handful of districts, urad dal and mustard oil have temporarily run out, limiting the availability of these items at local ration shops.

Additional flour allocation offers relief

To cushion the impact of the price rise, the state government has introduced a modest relief measure. Throughout October, every ration‑card holder will receive one extra kilogram of wheat flour, raising the monthly quota to 13 kg instead of the standard 12 kg.

While the extra flour provides a small financial breather, APL families will still need to allocate more money for sugar and urad dal purchases, especially as festive celebrations drive up demand for sweets and traditional dishes.

Combined with intermittent supply constraints, the holiday season poses a tougher budgeting scenario for ration consumers across Himachal Pradesh.
