Intensifying Standoff Over Form 6 and Voter‑Roll Overhaul
New Delhi – The political tussle between the ruling BJP and the opposition INDIA bloc sharpened on Tuesday, with the BJP alleging that the Congress is weaponising a petition before the Election Commission. According to the BJP, the opposition’s demand to revisit the voter‑registration mechanism is a calculated effort to resurrect Rahul Gandhi’s political relevance.
BJP Counters Congress’ Supreme Court Spin
National spokesperson Sambit Patra argued that the Congress is twisting the Supreme Court’s observations on Form 6 – the application citizens file to be entered into the electoral rolls. Patra emphasized that the apex court has not branded the form illegal; it merely ordered a probe into alleged tampering.
Opposition Keeps Pressuring the CEC
Leaders of the INDIA alliance converged on the Election Commission’s headquarters in New Delhi, seeking clarification from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar about the Special Intensive Revision exercise. They contend that procedural changes to Form 6 were introduced without adequate oversight and are demanding greater transparency.
BJP Rejects Illegality Allegations
Patra maintained that the Supreme Court’s notices are procedural in nature, not a verdict of misconduct. He highlighted the Election Commission’s position that the statutory Form 6 remains unchanged and that the revision was carried out under decisions already sanctioned by the commission.
Congress’ Alternative Narrative
The opposition insists that the purported modifications to Form 6 were irregular and that the CEC acted unilaterally. Rahul Gandhi framed the controversy as a litmus test for the commission’s impartiality, while Congress called for an independent audit of the voter‑roll update.
Underlying Motives Behind the Demonstration
Patra suggested that the protest is less about safeguarding electoral integrity and more about providing Rahul Gandhi with a stage to re‑emerge nationally. He warned that targeting constitutional bodies could become a recurring strategy for the opposition.
With both sides entrenched in their narratives, the Form 6 dispute is poised to dominate political conversation as the next election approaches.
