Bareilly: The BJP’s recent decision to drop Union Minister of State B. L. Verma from its latest Rajya Sabha slate has set off a fresh round of political debate across Rohilkhand, especially in Badaun and neighbouring districts.
Re‑examining Lodh leadership
Verma, a senior Badaun figure and a prominent voice of the Lodh community, is slated to complete his Rajya Sabha term in November. The party has instead elevated Uttar Pradesh minister and Aonla MLA Dharmapal Singh, a move many read as a tactical reshuffle before the state assembly elections.
Originating from Jyora Parwala village in the Bilsi Assembly segment, Verma entered the Upper House in November 2020 and currently serves as Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. His sidelining has ignited discussion about the BJP’s next steps in the region.
Analysts argue that Singh’s nomination is designed to solidify the party’s hold on the Lodh vote bank while showcasing another seasoned leader from the same community. Verma’s historic closeness to former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, coupled with his long‑standing rivalry with Kalyan’s son, ex‑Etah MP Rajveer Singh, adds another layer to the intra‑community contest.
By moving Singh to the Rajya Sabha, the BJP may be trying to unify Lodh support across western Uttar Pradesh.
Aonla’s shifting political equation
The reshuffle could also reverberate in the Aonla constituency, traditionally a Rajput bastion. Party strategists might contemplate fielding a high‑profile Rajput candidate there in the upcoming assembly poll.
Having repeatedly won the Aonla seat, Dharmapal Singh’s elevation opens a window for the BJP to rethink its candidate lineup for the area, underscoring the continued relevance of caste and regional balance in its electoral calculus.
Will B.L. Verma re‑enter the electoral arena?
With his Rajya Sabha tenure winding down, speculation abounds that Verma could stage a comeback via direct electoral politics. Party insiders suggest he may be earmarked for a legislative assembly contest from his home turf.
Verma’s stronghold lies in Ujhani, part of the Bilsi Assembly constituency, currently represented by BJP MLA Harish Shakya. Nearby Badaun city is held by BJP MLA Mahesh Chandra Gupta. Deploying Verma in a contest there could spark internal competition while leveraging his organisational expertise for the BJP’s campaign.
Verma’s pledge of loyalty
Despite being omitted from the Rajya Sabha list, Verma has maintained a measured tone. He affirmed that his term concludes in November and that he will accept any role the party entrusts to him.
He reiterated his commitment as a disciplined party worker, ready to shoulder responsibilities assigned by the organization.
The latest Rajya Sabha nominations therefore open several possibilities in Rohilkhand—from a reshuffling of local leadership to fresh caste dynamics and potential tweaks in assembly‑level candidate selection as Uttar Pradesh approaches its next election.
