Uttarakhand’s iconic Char Dham pilgrimage—Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri—recorded an astonishing 56,18,497 visitors in 2023, surpassing the previous high and establishing a new milestone for religious tourism in the state.
Record‑Breaking Turnout
The 2023 season witnessed devotees from every corner of India and abroad converging on the four sacred shrines, pushing the cumulative tally beyond the 56‑lakh mark for the first time. By September 14, the count had already crossed 50.56 lakh, signalling a steady climb in pilgrim interest.
Prioritising Safety and Comfort
State officials have stepped up preparations to accommodate the swelling crowds while safeguarding their well‑being. Key enhancements include:
- Expanded medical outposts along the routes
- Stricter traffic regulation and dedicated parking zones
- Reliable drinking‑water stations and upgraded sanitation facilities
- Additional lodging options for pilgrims in remote areas
Rapid response teams—comprising district administrators, police, health officers, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies—remain on standby, especially on fragile Himalayan stretches prone to landslides and adverse weather.
Infrastructure Drive Fuels Confidence
Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, major connectivity projects around Kedarnath, Badrinath and the other sacred sites have accelerated. New roadways, modernised helipads and upgraded pilgrim amenities have transformed the travel experience, encouraging more seekers to embark on the journey.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s Remarks
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami lauded the achievement, stressing that every pilgrim is treated as an honoured guest of Uttarakhand. He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to ensure a safe, comfortable passage for all and praised the collective effort of administrators, police, health workers, SDRF personnel, local bodies, priests and residents.
With the 2023 Char Dham Yatra breaking the 56‑lakh barrier, Uttarakhand has cemented its reputation as a premier destination for spiritual seekers, setting an ambitious benchmark for future pilgrimage seasons.
