Congress unveils council ticket list

The party has released the names of three aspirants it will put forward in the upcoming biennial elections to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Two seasoned members are contesting again, and a new face has been added for the Amravati Teachers’ constituency.

Returning incumbents and a fresh challenger

Abhijit Wanjari will again vie for the Nagpur Division Graduates’ seat, while Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar is set to contest the Pune Division Teachers’ seat. Both currently serve as MLCs, with their terms slated to end in December 2026.

Joining them is Aditi Pohare, who will contest the Amravati Division Teachers’ constituency for the first time, marking her debut in a council race.

Five seats up for grabs

The poll will cover five constituencies: three Graduates’ seats – Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune and Nagpur – and two Teachers’ seats – Amravati and Pune. All sitting members’ terms conclude on 6 December 2026.

MVA alliance’s seat‑sharing talks

The announcements arrive as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)—comprising Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar) and Shiv Sena (UBT)—continues internal discussions on seat‑allocation for the council elections. While each party releases its own roster, the alliance has pledged to synchronize its strategy ahead of the October vote.

As the nomination deadline looms, the contest for the five council seats is expected to sharpen, setting the stage for a closely watched showdown.
