New Delhi – The capital is set to undergo a massive digital transformation of its road‑control infrastructure. The Union government has approved a Rs 1,789.52 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) that will be deployed by the Delhi Police, interlinking every existing traffic signal with a centralised, real‑time data hub.
Dynamic Signals That React to Real‑World Flow
At the core of the ITMS are adaptive traffic lights. By continuously counting vehicles, each signal can extend or trim its green interval to mirror actual demand. Heavily trafficked corridors receive longer greens, while low‑volume routes enjoy shorter waits, smoothing traffic on the city’s main arteries.
Instant Green Corridors for Emergency Vehicles
When an ambulance, fire‑engine or police car approaches, the system instantly detects the alert and synchronises the lights along its route. This creates a seamless “green corridor” that escorts first‑responders through dense traffic without manual intervention.
Live Visibility of Congestion and Accidents
ITMS streams continuous data on vehicle speeds, bottleneck zones and crash locations to traffic controllers. With this insight, officials can dynamically reroute vehicles, dispatch assistance, or tweak signal timings, shifting from reactive to proactive traffic management.
AI‑Enabled Cameras Enforce Road Rules
AI‑driven cameras will patrol Delhi’s streets, automatically flagging violations such as red‑light jumping, stop‑line crossing, speeding, wrong‑way travel, riding without helmets, neglecting seat‑belts, illegal parking and mobile‑phone use while driving.
A Data‑Centred Road Future for Delhi
By fusing live traffic feeds, adaptive signalling and AI surveillance, the Rs 1,789.52 crore venture propels Delhi beyond a static, signal‑only model. The new platform promises quicker journeys, safer streets and unhindered routes for emergency services, ushering in a truly intelligent urban traffic ecosystem.
