Nomination Lodged at the State Assembly

On Tuesday, veteran BJP leader Dinesh Arya formally entered the race for Uttarakhand’s sole Rajya Sabha seat by submitting his nomination papers at the Dehradun Assembly. The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, state BJP president Mahendra Bhatt, several ministers, legislators and senior party operatives.

Arya’s Political Background

A native of Nainital district and a member of the Scheduled Caste community, Arya has been a stalwart grassroots worker for decades. He previously headed the BJP’s Nainital district unit and has occupied prominent positions in the party’s Scheduled Caste Morcha. Currently, he serves as vice‑chairperson of the Uttarakhand State‑Level Drinking Water Monitoring Council—a role accorded the rank of Minister of State—and also functions as Public Relations Officer to Chief Minister Dhami.

Endorsement from the Chief Minister

After the filing, CM Dhami lauded Arya as a “hard‑working cadre who rose through the ranks by sheer perseverance.” He emphasized that fielding a candidate from a modest background sends a clear message that the party rewards consistent dedication. Dhami also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the national leadership for backing Arya’s nomination.

What It Means for the Upcoming Rajya Sabha Poll

The election for Uttarakhand’s lone Rajya Sabha seat is scheduled for 16 October. The incumbent, BJP MP Naresh Bansal, will vacate the post on 25 November at the end of his term. Given the BJP’s strong majority in the state legislature, Arya’s victory is widely viewed as a foregone conclusion, reinforcing the party’s narrative that diligent service to the organisation yields tangible rewards.
