Gangotri Temple Enters Its Winter Pause

Uttarkashi authorities have announced that the famed Gangotri Temple will close its doors for the snowy season on 10 November at 12:05 PM. The chosen moment coincides with the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat and the traditional Annakoot and Govardhan Puja festivities.

Ceremonial Send‑off

The temple board, led by Secretary Suresh Semwal, confirmed the timetable following the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri. As the final chimes echo, the sacred palanquin carrying Goddess Ganga will be escorted out of the sanctum in a grand procession, accompanied by an army band and chants of “Jai Maa Ganga.”

The Trek to Mukhba

After the closure rites, the holy palanquin will proceed to Mukhba, the remote village that serves as Ganga’s winter residence. The convoy is slated to reach Mukhba on 11 November, the day of Bhai Dooj, where a series of prayers and rituals will be performed.

Devotees are invited to gather at the temporary shrine in Mukhba, offering their respects and seeking blessings throughout the six‑month winter interval. This relocation ensures uninterrupted devotion despite the main temple’s inaccessibility during heavy snowfall.

Why the Seasonal Shift Matters

The winter shutdown marks the conclusion of this year’s Char Dham pilgrimage cycle. While the high‑altitude location forces the primary sanctum to close, moving the palanquin preserves the spiritual thread for pilgrims who wish to continue honoring the river goddess.

For the next half‑year, Mukhba will become the focal point of worship, allowing believers to sustain their connection with Goddess Ganga until the temple reopens in spring.
