Man detained in Himachal over alleged rape linked to a broken marriage pledge

Mandi police have taken into custody a 30‑year‑old man from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, accused of raping a woman after promising to marry her.

The accused, identified as Sameer, son of Dilshad, was apprehended in the village of Thural, Kangra district, just as he was about to leave Himachal Pradesh.

How the complaint arose

According to the victim’s statement, Sameer gave her a marriage promise, then escorted her to Mandi where she alleges he assaulted her. After the incident, he allegedly fled with her motorcycle, mobile phone, roughly ₹70,000 in cash and jewellery, abandoning her in Chandigarh. All subsequent attempts to reach him were ignored.

Investigation milestones

The grievance was lodged on 29 August as a Zero FIR at the Civil Lines police station in Muzaffarnagar and later transferred to Sadar Police Station, Mandi, for a detailed probe.

Following the filing, the complainant posted a video from Mandi questioning why the police had not yet located the accused, noting that his phone remained active. Investigators examined mobile‑tower logs, pinpointed the signal to Thural, and moved in to arrest him before he could cross the state border.

Official remarks

Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar confirmed that the case is under active investigation and that Sameer will be produced before a court in accordance with legal procedures.

Authorities are now scrutinising the alleged theft of cash and jewellery alongside the sexual‑assault claim to decide on additional charges based on the evidence collected.
