Incident Overview

On Tuesday, the Panama‑registered bulk carrier MT On Peace was hit by an unidentified projectile while transiting the geopolitically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, close to Oman's shoreline. The ship carried 19 crew members, 17 of whom were Indian nationals.

The strike left twelve seafarers injured, including eleven Indians, prompting an urgent medical evacuation and a rapid diplomatic response from New Delhi.

Evacuation and Medical Assistance

Omani authorities swiftly dispatched rescue units, ferrying the wounded to the coastal town of Khasab where local hospitals began providing treatment. Indian officials publicly praised Oman for the prompt assistance and the care extended to the injured sailors.

India’s Diplomatic Reaction

The Ministry of External Affairs condemned the incident as a flagrant violation of international maritime law. New Delhi called for an immediate cessation of attacks on merchant vessels, underscoring that ships, crews and civilian infrastructure must be safeguarded.

India also appealed to the global community to ensure the free flow of traffic through the Hormuz corridor, stressing that uninterrupted commercial navigation is vital for world trade.

Wider Maritime‑Security Concerns

The Hormuz Strait, a critical chokepoint through which a sizable portion of global oil supplies passes, has experienced a series of recent incidents targeting commercial shipping. Rising regional tensions have amplified worries that such assaults could jeopardise international supply chains.

Ongoing Monitoring

Indian authorities continue to track the health of the injured crew while evaluating the broader security ramifications of the attack. The episode highlights the increasing vulnerability of merchant vessels operating in one of the world’s most contested waterways.
