As the 2027 Punjab Legislative Assembly election draws nearer, the state’s leading political formations have shifted into overdrive, mobilising volunteers, road‑shows and issue‑centric rallies to sway the electorate.
SAD initiates a door‑to‑door crusade across all 117 constituencies
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will kick off its ground‑level outreach on 6 October, setting out from Attari under the guidance of party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. Party workers will visit every household in each constituency, cataloguing local grievances and suggestions. The amassed data will feed into a fresh manifesto slated for release on 1 November. A statewide bus tour, also headed by Badal, is planned to begin on 10 November, taking the party’s message directly to voters.
AAP highlights its record in government
The incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continues to leverage its time in power. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is touring assembly segments, meeting residents and showcasing flagship schemes such as free electricity and the ‘Mawan‑Dhian Satkar’ programme. Ministers and MLAs have been urged to maintain a high profile in their constituencies, reinforcing the narrative that AAP’s development agenda yields concrete benefits. In the 2022 election, AAP captured 92 of Punjab’s 117 seats, forming the state government.
BJP ramps up anti‑drug messaging with an extensive yatra
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has placed drug abuse at the centre of its Punjab outreach. In September, it launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, dispatching four separate yatras that together covered roughly 4,000 km across every assembly constituency. The campaign culminated in a rally in Jalandhar on 30 September, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed supporters. Although the BJP managed only two seats in the 2022 Assembly poll and failed to win any of the state’s 13 Lok Sabha seats in 2024, its vote share has shown an upward trajectory.
Congress wrestles with organisational renewal
The Indian National Congress has responded to internal turbulence by appointing Pargat Singh as the new state president, replacing Raja Warring. Singh’s immediate mandate is to unite the party’s disparate factions, heal internal rifts and rejuvenate the grassroots network ahead of the 2027 contest. In the 2022 Assembly election, Congress secured 18 seats, but improved its standing in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, winning seven of the 13 parliamentary seats in Punjab.
The ground battle is already heating up
Even with months still left before the vote, the surge in door‑to‑door canvassing, bus tours and issue‑driven rallies indicates that Punjab’s political arena is entering a decisive phase. While SAD gathers voter input for its upcoming manifesto, AAP foregrounds its governance achievements, BJP pushes the anti‑drug narrative, and Congress focuses on rebuilding its organisational base. The coming weeks are likely to witness a flurry of constituency‑level events as each party strives to cement its support ahead of the 2027 polls.
