New Delhi – On 6 October, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that left‑handed batter Smriti Mandhana will take over as the full‑time captain of the Indian women’s cricket side, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur.

Mandhana’s Rise on the International Stage

Since breaking into the senior squad in 2013, Mandhana has become one of the most consistent run‑scorers in women’s cricket, representing India in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She has already captained the side in 18 T20 Internationals and four One‑Day Internationals, and served as vice‑captain for several campaigns. The BCCI cited her blend of experience and deep familiarity with the group as decisive in the appointment.

WPL Success with Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Beyond the national team, Mandhana has shone in franchise cricket. As the leader of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, she guided the side to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and again in 2026, cementing her reputation as a tactically sharp captain.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s Enduring Impact

While Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to feature in the playing XI, she will hand over the captaincy. Under her stewardship India clinched its first Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and captured Asian Games gold medals, captaining across all three formats.

Looking Ahead

Mandhana’s first assignment as permanent skipper comes against Zimbabwe, with a three‑match T20I series followed by three ODIs set to commence on 16 October. The BCCI expressed confidence that her extensive international exposure, prior leadership stints, and proven WPL pedigree will propel the side forward.
