Lucknow – After a thorough aerial and on‑ground assessment of water‑logged zones surrounding the state capital, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a far‑reaching flood‑control initiative. The flagship of the plan is a newly proposed embankment stretching from Faizullaganj to Naimish, designed to tame the frequent overflows of the Gomti River.
Green Flood Barrier Concept
The envisaged structure will double as a green corridor, with a paved roadway running along the top of the raised levee. Survey teams have been instructed to execute a detailed top‑down mapping of the Gomti banks and to prepare a full‑scale project dossier. Complementary drainage networks and pumping stations will be installed to channel rain‑water away from the protected zone, ensuring swift evacuation of excess water.
Field Assessment and Immediate Relief
During a visit to the flood‑stricken locality of Bakshi Ka Talab, the chief minister interacted with residents, inspected a temporary health camp, and oversaw the distribution of emergency rations. He ordered the relocation of families from high‑risk pockets to provisional relief shelters set up in schools and marriage halls.
Assistance for Displaced Residents
Relief‑camp managers are now mandated to serve hot meals twice a day, supply milk for children, and provide nutrient‑rich food for pregnant women. Livestock owners will receive fodder, while camps lacking electricity will be equipped with solar lanterns and Petromax lamps.
Compensation Framework
Households that have suffered loss of life due to drowning or lightning will be granted an immediate cash assistance of ₹4 lakh. Families whose homes were completely wiped out and meet eligibility criteria will be allotted houses under existing state housing schemes. Agricultural damages, including crop loss and livestock death, will be evaluated so that eligible farmers can claim appropriate compensation.
Relief Kit Details
Each affected family is being provided with a kit containing 26 essential items such as rice, wheat flour, potatoes, pulses, cooking oil, salt, spices and waterproof material. The kits are intended to sustain households until regular supply chains are restored.
Security and Health Measures
The CM instructed police, Home Guards, PRD staff and local watchmen to patrol the camps and vacated homes, safeguarding property and deterring looting. Medical units will keep anti‑snake‑venom and anti‑rabies injections ready, while dedicated medical and veterinary camps are being rolled out across the hardest‑hit zones.
Causes of This Year’s Flooding
Intense rainfall over the Gomti’s upstream catchment—covering Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and even parts of neighboring Nepal—caused river levels to surge dramatically, submerging low‑lying districts around Lucknow. The Faizullaganj‑Naimish embankment is now being positioned as a long‑term safeguard, promising not only flood mitigation but also enhanced connectivity via the road that will crown the levee.
