Bettiah: State officials are accelerating assistance for those affected by the West Champaran floods, with plans to deposit cash directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts ahead of the Dussehra festivities.

Rapid Cash Assistance

Speaking from his residence on Hospital Road, BJP MP Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal told reporters that every possible step is being taken to support families and cultivators whose lives were upended by the recent deluge.

Crop Insurance Payouts for Affected Farmers

Farmers whose fields were inundated will be compensated through the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. The state Agriculture Department is currently aggregating loss data to compute precise payouts. Jaiswal highlighted that the scheme, dormant in the district for almost ten years, has now been re‑activated.

Root Causes of the Flood Surge

The MP traced the calamity to a sequence that began with the breach of 13 dams on Nepal’s Trishuli River roughly a month ago. Subsequent three days of heavy rain caused river levels in both Bihar and Nepal to rise sharply. The damaged dams also forced a surge of water into the Valmikinagar barrage, aggravating pressure on local flood‑control structures.

Embankment Repair Efforts

After a leak was identified in a vulnerable embankment, the Water Resources Department’s secretary arrived on site for an urgent assessment. Within 24 hours, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary visited the affected villages, issued orders, and supervised the launch of repair work, slated for completion by Saturday.

Overview of Development and Relief Projects

The press briefing also reviewed the status of ongoing development initiatives in the area alongside emergency relief measures. Attendees included Nautan MLA Narayan Prasad, BJP district president Roopak Srivastava, local leaders Ravi Singh and Manoj Singh, and several other party officials.
