Fatal Incident at Sur Ghat
Amid the Jitiya festivities, two eighteen‑year‑old women, Kajal Kumari and Pinky Kumari of Zakheera, slipped into the swift, deeper currents of the Yamuna River at Sur Ghat, close to the Wazirabad bridge, and tragically drowned while performing the customary river‑bath ceremony.
Rescue Efforts and Recovery
Bystanders shouted for assistance as the girls vanished below the surface. Local rescue divers and volunteers launched an immediate search, locating the bodies and hauling them ashore, but the victims had already succumbed to the river’s force.
Police Response and Autopsy
A team from Timarpur police station arrived swiftly, secured the bodies and sent them for post‑mortem examination.
“The girls entered a deeper section of the river during the bathing rite and unfortunately drowned,” explained North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt.
An official inquiry has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Families Demand Better Ghat Safety
In the aftermath, relatives of Kajal and Pinky have raised serious concerns about the safety infrastructure at Sur Ghat. They contend that the hazardous stretch lacked adequate barricades, clear warning signs, and on‑site security personnel to prevent entry into the deeper water.
Police officials have promised a thorough review of existing safety provisions and the implementation of corrective measures highlighted by the bereaved families.
