New Delhi – The Indian leg‑spinner disclosed on Friday that he is hanging up his red‑ball boots, closing a first‑class chapter that stretched close to ten years while affirming his ambition to don the India jersey once more in ODIs and T20Is.

A Red‑Ball Curtain Call

Chahal’s goodbye note reflected on a path that began when he was ten and first grasped a red cricket ball. He described first‑class cricket as more than a format – it taught him patience, resilience and the steel required to survive demanding spells on the pitch.

Although a Test cap never materialised, he expressed heartfelt gratitude for the memories and opportunities the longer game afforded, acknowledging its pivotal role in shaping the bowler he is today.

148 Wickets Across 49 Matches

The 36‑year‑old wraps up his first‑class ledger with 148 scalps at an average of 32.27, his best figures a tidy 6 for 25. His latest assignment was with Northamptonshire in England’s county circuit.

Chahal’s final first‑class outing came at Lord’s against Middlesex, where he bagged two wickets. In the 2026‑27 County Championship he claimed 21 wickets in five games, highlighted by a nine‑wicket haul versus Durham.

Aiming for an ODI/T20 Return

Even as he steps away from the red ball, Chahal made it clear he is not shutting the door on international cricket. In his farewell message he reiterated his hunger to represent India in the limited‑overs arena and insisted he still has plenty of cricket left in his tank.

He also thanked the Haryana Cricket Association and steadfast backers – Ranbir Singh Mahindra and Anirudh Singh Choudhary – for their unwavering belief throughout his career.

With the first‑class saga concluded, Chahal’s full attention now turns to the shorter formats, hoping to earn his way back into the Indian side.
