Statewide push to restore 1.9 million voter entries
The Election Department of Chhattisgarh has kicked off a month‑long, door‑to‑door operation aimed at locating eligible residents whose names were inadvertently removed from the electoral rolls after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The drive covers all 90 Assembly constituencies and targets roughly 1.9 million individuals for re‑registration.
Why names vanished during the SIR
In the course of the SIR exercise, about 2.5 million records were struck off the state's voter lists. Approximately 600,000 of those belonged to deceased persons, while close to 1.9 million were deleted for reasons such as missing documentation or failure to appear for verification. The current initiative concentrates on this latter group, offering them a fresh opportunity to be listed again.
How the field operation will be carried out
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will undertake systematic house‑to‑house visits. Their responsibilities include pinpointing households where eligible members were left out, assisting them in completing the necessary paperwork, and guiding them through the submission of Form 6 to request inclusion in the electoral roll.
No need to reference the 2003 roll
Applicants under this special re‑enrolment scheme are not required to furnish details from the 2003 electoral roll. They must, however, present the standard documents prescribed for voter registration, and BLOs will clarify exactly what is needed.
First‑time voters are also being targeted
The effort is not limited to those previously on the roll. Young citizens who have recently turned 18 will be identified and encouraged to file Form 6 as well. BLOs are tasked with spotting these new electors during their field visits.
Objective: precise and inclusive voter lists
The department aims to complete the re‑enrolment process before the official roll is published, ensuring that no eligible resident is unintentionally omitted. By blending rigorous field verification with streamlined paperwork, the campaign seeks to make Chhattisgarh’s electoral rolls both accurate and comprehensive.
