Gunfire Shatters the Calm at Kotla Chungi
At roughly 9:45 pm on Tuesday, a sudden volley of bullets rang out across the bustling Kotla Chungi crossing in Firozabad. The discharge, coming from a legally‑registered revolver, sent merchants, pedestrians and lingering Ramleela attendees scrambling for shelter, turning the lively bazaar into a scene of terror.
Those Hurt in the Attack
Two people were caught in the line of fire:
- Shipra Tailang, 35, a resident of Gunjan Enclave, Mathura Nagar, married to Rishabh "Bunty" Tailang for about ten years. She had been staying with her parents following a two‑year marital dispute.
- Sunny Thakur, a young entrepreneur who runs an internet‑service shop from a rented stall near the crossing.
Police say Shipra was at a relative’s home discussing family matters when the shots were fired, while Sunny was inside his shop attending to customers.
Extent of Their Injuries
Both victims sustained serious gunshot wounds:
- Shipra: multiple bullets struck her shoulder, abdomen and ribs; one projectile passed dangerously close to her hand.
- Sunny: injuries to his chest and rib cage were severe enough to require transfer to a specialist hospital in Agra.
Emergency responders rushed them to the government trauma centre for urgent treatment.
Police Action and Suspect Capture
Officers stationed nearby heard the gunshots, surged to the scene and chased the shooter. Within minutes they recovered the revolver and placed the suspect in custody. Senior officials, including SP City Ravishankar Prasad and CO City Santosh Kumar, arrived shortly thereafter to supervise the investigation.
Underlying Causes
According to police reports, Shipra and Rishabh’s marriage had been under strain for almost two years. Shipra’s brother, Shashank, claims the discord stemmed from Rishabh’s alleged involvement with another woman. Shipra confirmed she was engaged in a family‑mediated discussion when the shooting erupted.
She is the mother of two young boys, who remain under her care while the case proceeds.
Continuing Investigation
Investigators are reviewing witness testimonies, forensic findings and the couple’s marital history to pinpoint a motive. The seized firearm has been catalogued, and the accused remains in police detention pending further legal steps.
Impact on the Community
The incident occurred just after a popular Ramleela performance, meaning many locals were still making their way home through the market. Witnesses described a frantic scramble as the shooter pursued the victims, heightening fear among onlookers.
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activity as they piece together the events of that harrowing night.
