Agra: Uttar Pradesh police have taken a woman into custody in connection with a violent assault that was first reported almost eleven months ago in Barhan, Agra district. Investigators allege she attacked her brother‑in‑law after he refused to marry her sister.
Incident Occurred on Diwali Night
The alleged assault took place on the night of 20 October 2025, following Diwali celebrations. The victim, employed as a chemical assistant engineer at a cement plant in Haldwani, had returned home for the holidays.
Attack Inside a Bedroom
According to the complaint, the engineer was sleeping outside the house after the Diwali puja when his sister‑in‑law summoned him to a bedroom at around 2 a.m. Police say she then assaulted him with a blade, inflicting severe wounds.
The victim’s screams woke other family members, who rushed to his side. Police arrived shortly thereafter and transferred him to SN Medical College for emergency care. Because of the seriousness of his injuries, he was later shifted to AIIMS, Delhi.
Suspect Went Into Hiding
Following the attack, the woman’s husband reportedly escorted her back to her parents’ house in Etah. She subsequently vanished from the village, evading police attempts to locate her.
After persistent investigation, officers finally traced her to a relative’s residence and placed her under arrest.
Attempt‑to‑Murder Charge Added
DCP West Zone Aditya Singh stated that the medical report confirmed the victim’s injuries were grave and potentially life‑threatening. Consequently, the police have upgraded the case to include an attempt‑to‑murder charge.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the assault.
