Dehradun. In a swift response to growing public outcry, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered the immediate suspension of six engineers tied to the Jyolikot drinking‑water crisis in Nainital district.

Background of the issue

The problem surfaced after residents of Jyolikot reported discoloured, foul‑smelling water from their taps. The district administration launched an inquiry, compiling evidence that pointed to lapses in the operational duties of the state water bodies.

Engineers placed on suspension

The disciplinary action targets personnel from two agencies:

  • Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan – the in‑charge Superintending Engineer (Haldwani), an Assistant Engineer and an Additional Assistant Engineer attached to the Nainital unit.
  • Drinking Water Corporation, Bhimtal – the Executive Engineer, the in‑charge Assistant Engineer and a Junior Engineer.

Additional warning issued

Alongside the six suspensions, the Executive Engineer of Nainital Jal Sansthan received a formal warning, with the administration signalling that any repeat of the misconduct will invite harsher penalties.

Chief Minister’s message on public health

CM Dhami underscored that safeguarding public health is a non‑negotiable priority for his government. He instructed department heads and senior officials to adopt a more proactive and sensitive approach when handling essential‑service complaints.

“Public health cannot be compromised at any cost. Public interest is paramount for our government, and action will be taken against any officer or employee who ignores the interests of the people. All department heads and senior officials have also been repeatedly instructed in this regard.”

The water‑safety crackdown follows another recent directive by the Chief Minister, which led to the cancellation of fake certificates for eight NEET‑UG 2026 candidates and the revocation of their admissions.
