Dehradun: Uttarakhand inaugurated its 2026 Wildlife Week with a packed agenda of activities intended to deepen conservation initiatives and spotlight the state’s rich natural legacy. The celebration kicked off on 1 October at the Forest Research Institute campus in Dehradun and will continue through 8 October.

Bridging Communities and Nature

The programme seeks to tighten the bond between local residents and the region’s wildlife, urging people to become active custodians of forests, biodiversity and vital habitats. Over the course of the week, workshops, school‑focused outreach and guided nature treks will illustrate the ecological importance of Uttarakhand’s varied terrains.

Uttarakhand’s Diverse Wildlife Landscape

From soaring Himalayan summits to the low‑lying Terai plains, the state encompasses an extraordinary mosaic of ecosystems. Its woodlands are home to emblematic species such as tigers, elephants, leopards, bears and several deer, as well as a spectacular array of birds. Conservation officials stress that safeguarding individual animals is inseparable from protecting the corridors and seasonal routes that enable their movement across the landscape.

Tackling Human‑Wildlife Conflict

A key focus of this year’s Wildlife Week is reducing friction between people and wild animals. Communities bordering forested zones often face encounters that endanger livestock, crops and human safety. The campaign therefore concentrates on three pillars:

  • Awareness: Community meetings and radio bulletins educate residents about animal behaviour and safety protocols.
  • Monitoring: Strengthened patrols and camera‑trap networks track wildlife movements near villages.
  • Participation: Local volunteers are being trained as wildlife liaisons to report sightings and support rapid‑response actions.

Preserving Corridors and Guiding Development

Authorities reiterate that any new infrastructure or tourism venture must respect established wildlife corridors. Environmental impact assessments are now compulsory for new roads, hydro‑electric projects and mining operations to ensure that critical pathways remain uninterrupted.

Future Outlook

As the week draws to a close on 8 October, officials hope the enthusiasm generated will evolve into lasting community stewardship. By marrying scientific expertise with grassroots participation, Uttarakhand aims to foster a sustainable coexistence between its people and the remarkable fauna that inhabit the region.
